Singapore has made considerable progress in developing the use of ADR to resolve disputes in various areas, from commercial to consumer and relational issues.

Milestones
Arbitration in Singapore started since the 1960s when the Industrial Arbitration Court was established to handle industrial matters.

Several key establishments in the 1990s added to Singapore’s reputation and influence in the arbitration arena. These include, the establishment of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), the enactment of the International Arbitration Act (‘IAA’) incorporating the UNCITRAL Model Law on Commercial Arbitration and the launch of the Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC).

Since the year 2000, more schemes have been developed such as tax incentives and work pass exemptions for those conducting international arbitration hearings in Singapore. In 2007, the Permanent Court of Arbitration established its first Asian centre in Singapore establishing itself as an international arbitration centre.
